Not sure how The Dude and his comrades would feel about duckpin, but sad to hear it’s gone and especially sad to hear it was replaced by a video game!

Hey, Dude. Another great piece. Thank you for that.

If I’m not mistaken, Johnson Duckpin Lanes in the Hamden Plaza is still in business. It’s been there since I was a kid, and that’s a long time ago, from back in the day when I’d ride my one speed bicycle or hitchhike up Dixwell Avenue to bowl a few games with my friends.

Interestingly enough, the High Lane Club in North Haven has about six duckpin lanes so you might just be invited to a bowling party there.

Now candlepin is a whole different story and, yes, there’s one of those left too but you have to drive about two hours north to the charming little village of Shelburne Falls (shown a few times in the Paul Giamatti film “The Holdovers”). It’s worth the trip though, especially in May when the Bridge of Flowers is all in bloom. The last time I bowled was also about ten years ago and, come to think of it, I bowled candlepin at The Shelburne Falls Bowling Alley.
