Yes, Steve, we have lost so many neighborhood theaters. I wish I could have seen a movie at The Dreamland! What a great name! Let's hope the Criterion remains in some way.
No one wants to do business in the cities because crime is uncontrolled. That includes merchants and shoppers. There is no penalty for stealing, gangs of kids shut down thoroughfares nightly in takeovers, and people are hurt in violent fights in the malls. There is no rule of law.
I am an home grown New Haven resident. My neighborhood theater was called The Dreamland. I've mourned the loss of all the neighborhood theaters and the downtown theaters. I was overjoyed when the Criterion opened and have enjoyed many film there. The first runs, the midnight movies and the Sunday Movies and Mimosas. I've enjoyed many conversations with the staff from the ticket takers, concession people and a few of the managers. I didn't really have to order at the concession because they always knew my order (small popcorn, no butter). I'm hoping against hope that this theater and its staff can continue.
Such a loss, I can empathize! My own local cinema nearly went under owing to the founding owners’ ill health and need to sell—luckily like-minded cineastes swooped in to buy the Screening Room, affording its many panicked patrons cause for celebration. Fingers crossed for a similar story for the Criterion!

Can't say I dug the surfer movies. Monsters were my thing!
I did see "Endless Dummy," however.

I'm worried about the New Haven Symphony too. Don't know if it's audience will return. I guess we will find out opening night.
